In-Flight Service is seeking a dynamic and strategic individual with proven leadership skills to lead and manage field operations team to oversee multiple strategic programs. The manager will be responsible for the design and execution of the OBS strategy projects associated with revamping our OBS network. The manager will analyze, decide and instill new providers in our hubs. In addition to modularizing our existing $200M contracts, the manager will provide strategic and process-driven leadership to the transition teams. This will involve guiding the existing DL management on production, delivery, and continuous improvement functions for the catering facility while also being a strategic thought partner with our Catering Partners.

As part of the Core Team, this manager will manage SMEs as well as cross-divisional partners in CRE, Supply Chain Management, IT, CSSC, Legal and Airport Customer Service to achieve seamless execution of catering objectives, be accountable for a $33M CAPEX, to deliver operational results and productivity at the world’s largest flight kitchen. The manager will drive decision-making for the Core Team and escalate to OBS Leadership in the Operations Innovation team. The Manager will also develop and implement station level Caterer scorecards for vendor management and will liaison with SCM, legal and Audit on behalf of OBS leadership.

This position will be based at the General Offices in Atlanta.

Summary of responsibilities (not comprehensive of all tasks):

  • Leads the Core team to execute the strategy and manage the investment of $33M CAP-EX in 2020 and 20M+ in 2021 being allocated for Domestic, commissary and International flight kitchen upgrades, i.e., the largest catering operation in the world.

  • Responsible for analyzing and selecting partners to onboard in alignment with OBS strategy and de-risk the operational impact to 800 flights/day.

  • Leads and provides direction to project managers, consultants, architects and the SMEs assigned to IFS from OBS, CRE, SC, Legal and IT.

  • Responsible for ensuring contracts, hiring, IT infrastructure upgrades, and asset procurement are selected and executed in alignment with strategic timeline. This includes developing, selecting and implementing.

  • Creates and manages data driven performance objectives, and countermeasures to ensure achievement of goals with a strong focus on process orientation.

  • Analyzes and manages financial/contract data to ensure operational performance and alignment of departmental priorities including supporting new launches.

  • Creates plans to drive increased effectiveness and efficiency at the hub to ensure a high-performance organization.

  • Responsible for communicating and updating strategic initiatives including developing deck’s for C-Suite, EVP, SVP’s, OBS Leadership, also must drive IFS communications plan for broader frontline engagement,

  • Provides direction and executes cross-functional strategic initiatives, including partnering closely with Innovation and CI team to operationalize and own new processes and innovations.

  • Works with service providers to stabilize operations and drive commercial accountability to Plan 2020 while continually improving operational performance.

  • Provides and tracks quality training requirements for audit team and suppliers on station site as required, including but not limited to general audits and inspection of aircraft and catering facilities.

  • Builds and maintains communication with the supplier’s quality organization; responsible for ensuring that project strategies and business process improvements are cohesive and present the greatest opportunity for Delta Air Lines.

  • Engages in development of organizational talent and cross-training within areas of responsibility to position organization for growth and succession planning.

  • Develops both strategic & tactical plans that create a safety-conscious environment resulting in employee safety & well-being.

What you need to succeed (minimum qualifications)

  • Must have a bachelor's degree in business management, finance, technical field (e.g., industrial engineering) or equivalent work experience; a master's or other advanced degree is a plus.

  • Must have a minimum of 8+ years related experience, preferably in operations management, knowledge of theory of constraints, management, project leadership and/or airline operations or supply chain management.

  • Must have experience in airline catering operations, asset management, supplier management or Supply Chain Management.

  • Need proven experience in strategy, including strategic thinking, creation of longer term strategic plans, ability to successfully manage strategic business cases and clearly articulate strategic vision.

  • Must have the ability to diagnose functional area strengths and weaknesses and develop recommendations for improvement.

  • Must be able to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions and solve problems in a timely and accurate manner.

  • Must convey a professional image with ability to lead, manage and communicate with all levels of the organization and its suppliers.

  • Must be a self-starter, with strong decision making, analytical and planning skills required, ability to work independently with limited instruction or supervision.

  • Must possess excellent communication, interpersonal and relationship building skills, with the ability to motivate and lead a team to achieve desired business results.

  • Must have the ability to quickly learn applicable U. S. Government and local regulations governing safe food handling and prevention of food borne illness and become knowledgeable in the hazard analysis and critical control point (HACCP) system of food protection.

  • Must learn TSA catering security regulations and become familiar with Customs regulations relative to bonded material and become familiar with federal and state laws regarding alcohol.

  • Required to support a 24/7 operation and travel, including over-night, is often required.

  • Must be performing satisfactorily in current position.

What will give you a competitive edge (preferred qualifications)

  • Certification in project management, quality auditing and/or Six Sigma black belt/green belt training is highly desired.

  • Knowledge of SAP, BRIO or Visual Basic is a plus.

  • Experience with customs regulations, bonded material handling and federal and state liquor laws a plus.
